James A. Pollock

James A. Pollock Sr., a former councilman in Reading, died May 19 at 12:25 a.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center, where he had been a patient since May 9.

Pollock, 78, Reading, was the husband of Mary Lou (Lucchese) Pollock.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Lillian (Pollock) Fisher.

Pollock had been employed for 35 years by the U.S. Postal Service, Reading, serving as a letter carrier and later supervisor until his retirement in 1985.

He was past president of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Association of Postal Supervisors.

Pollock was appointed to serve on Reading city council in 1987, filling the seat vacated by former city mayor Karen A. Miller, and served in his post until 1991. He was later an assistant to former mayor Warren Haggerty from 1992-96.

He served for many years on the Reading Municipal Stadium Commission and was its manager for 24 years. In 1991, Pollock was honored with a plaque unveiled at the stadium for his years of service.

Pollock was a member of the former Reading Charter Commission.

He was past president and foreman of Neversink Fire Company with the Reading Fire Department and was a volunteer firefighter for a total of 40 years.

Pollock was a committeeman and past president of the 18th Ward Democratic Association, and was a life member of the Jackson Democratic Association.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a former trustee of Greater Reading Post 179, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Pollock was former vice president of the Reading-Berks Basketball Old-Timers Association.

He is also survived by a son, James A. Jr., West Lawn; and four daughters: Lynda L. (Pollock) Dunkelberger, Cumru Township; Joy L. (Pollock) Althouse, Shillington; and Cheryl L. (Pollock) Woyton and Jill S. (Pollock) Bortz, both of Exeter Township.

There are also 14 grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 am in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Reading. Viewing Monday evening 5:30 - 8:00 pm and Tuesday morning 8:00 - 9:00 am in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to Baseballtown Charities, PO Box 15050, Reading, Pa 19612.
