James Hyland Jewell

On Saturday, October 30 2021, Dr. James H. Jewell, Jr. passed away peacefully in his home. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Jewell, whom he was married to for 65 years. He has seven surviving children, 16 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Dr. Jewell was born in Narberth, PA to the late James H. and Dorothy D. Jewell.

Dr. Jewell graduated from Lehigh University in 1954 Phi Beta Kappa and Columbia University Medical School in 1959 Alpha Epsilon Delta.

From 1976 to 1991 he practiced Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital, Community General Hospital, and the Reading Hospital and was appointed Chief of Thoracic Surgery from 1988-1991.

In 1991, the Lord called Dr. Jewell to medical missions in Zambia, Africa and he became the Medical Director at Luampa Mission Hospital in Kaoma, Zambia from 1991 until 1995. From 1996-2017 Dr. Jewell was Senior Lecturer, Dept of Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Zambia.

In June 2002, Dr. Jewell was elected "Missionary of the Year" by CMDA USA National Convention, Chicago.

He was one of the founding members of PAACS (Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons), a volunteer surgical training program that responds to the overwhelming need for surgeons in Africa.

Two of Dr. Jewell's greatest loves were spending time with his family and his involvement in Bible studies. In addition, Dr. Jewell had a passion for music and was first chair trumpet in the Lehigh University Band. He enjoyed tennis, sailing, hunting and skiing with family and friends throughout his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Kuhn Funeral Home in West Reading, PA.
