James R. Garraway, 83, formerly of Wyomissing, passed away on December 10, 2021 at Phoebe Berks. He was the loving husband of Betty J. (Rohrer) Garraway. They were married for 61 years. Jim was born December 14, 1937 in Gilberton, Schuylkill County, PA the son of the late Hormah W and Anna Mae (Evans) Garraway.
He was a graduate of Frackville High School, the Class of 1955. He graduated from Penn State University with an Associate Degree in Drafting and Design, and from Fairfield University (BEI) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for Gilbert Associates, ATT Bell Laboratories and Carpenter Technology retiring in 1999 with 37 years of service with CarTech.
His is predeceased by his wife, Betty, in March 2021, son, John W., in April 2006, his sisters, Anna Mae Bogdan, Jean Johnson, Shirley Garraway, and Rose Garraway, and his brother, Hormah Garraway. He is survived by a son, James R. (Deborah), two grandsons, Michael (Stephanie) and Mark, a great grandson, Nolan Edward, his sister, Edith Conrad, and many nieces and nephews.
James was a member of the Lincoln Park United Methodist Church where he was active in the Chancel and Bell Choirs. James and Betty acted as the Financial Secretaries for many years. James was a member of Mensa's with an IQ of 141. He was active in Indian Guides, Cub Scouts, Scouting and Explorers. He was the District Commissioner for the Housatonic District in Connecticut. He was a past President of the Industrial Management Club of Reading and a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society "Pretzel City Chorus & Nuggets" for 58 years. He sang in many different quartets around Berks County. James and Betty enjoyed traveling, camping in every state and had toured almost every county in the world. They even accomplished visiting every continent with the last one being Antarctica just before COVID shut down the world.
A viewing will be held for family and friends on Wednesday December 15, 2021 with a visitation from 3-4 with services beginning at 4pm at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading PA 19611.
Burial will take place at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shamokin, PA at the convenience of the family.
