James T. Daley, for whom Reading remained a touchstone, died September 28, 2021, days following his 79th birthday. Though Jim moved to many destinations including New York City, Alaska, Skaneateles, NY, settling more recently in Raleigh NC, those who knew him might claim that his heart never left Reading. Jim would spend endless hours asking about, retelling, and reliving events from his years in Reading, cajoling friends, and relatives to listen to lively accounts of many of the significant events of his youthful days in the city.
Jim grew up on Hollenbach Street, graduating from St. Margaret's school and Reading Central Catholic High School where he played Varsity baseball, anchoring centerfield for the Cardinal's 1960 championship team. After attending Fordham University in New York, Jim served in the U.S. Army doing Intelligence work in the Aleutian Islands. He married Patricia Steele in 1968. Their daughter Amy was born the next year. Another daughter, Ann Kathleen, died in infancy.
Jim always asked about Reading, even while enjoying the comforts and weather of the south. He made a "Reading Tour" with his brother and sister in 2008 driving to all the significant places he loved in the city, including his home on Hollenbach, all the playgrounds, ball parks, schools, and downtown haunts he held dear to his heart. He made plans months ahead to attend his High School reunion and though disappointed about 2020, had made plans to attend Central Catholic's 60th reunion this year. Unfortunately, that was not to be.
Jim is predeceased by his parents, Thomas J. and Mary (Wolf) Daley and his daughter. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Patricia, his daughter Amy Daley, his brother, Michael Daley and sister Kathleen McKinley, nephews, Stephen Daley, Peter Daley,Will McKinley and niece, Kathryn McKinley and many long-term friends in Reading. Jim had an engaging, outgoing personality and brought a special joy to those he met. We will miss him greatly.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's name may be sent to your favorite charity.
