James A. Abraham

James A. Abraham, DDS, age 80, of Spring Twp., and a life-long resident of Berks County, died on June 6, 2011, at Reading Hospital after a lengthy illness. Dr. Abraham was born June 23, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, the son of the late David and Margaret (Auman) Abraham.

Following graduation from Reading High School in 1948, Dr. Abraham enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Breckenridge during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, Dr Abraham returned to Pennsylvania and attended Franklin & Marshall College, graduating in 1956. He was a 1959 graduate of Temple University Dental School in Philadelphia. Dr. Abraham maintained a family dental practice for over 40 years in his Spring Twp. home office where he provided care to multiple generations of loyal patients, always with a song and a smile and usually with a joke or two. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association and retired in 1999.

Dr. Abraham was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Berkshire County Club where he served on the board of directors. The camaraderie he shared with his friends over breakfast and lunch at the Berkshire or Arner's was a constant throughout his adult life. In addition to golf, Dr. Abraham enjoyed summers with his family at their home in Avalon, New Jersey. He enjoyed fishing and cruising on the various boats he owned, all of which were named "Maharba," Abraham spelled backwards. With his wife Joyce, he spent 18 winters in Palm City, Florida and enjoyed trips to visit his children and grandchildren.

Dr. Abraham is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce L. (Katzenmoyer) Abraham, and three children: Lynn Alexander (Jim), of Chevy Chase, Md, Susan Gebauer (Jay) of Moorestown, NJ and Dr. David J. Abraham of Spring Twp. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Kristyn, Katie and Jimmy Gebauer, J.D., Michael and Susie Alexander and Nicole, Jimmy and Carlie Abraham.
