Dr. J. Peter G. Muhlenberg, 76, Wyomissing, died of natural causes Oct. 28, in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
He was the husband of Dorothy S. (Snider) Muhlenberg.
Born in Wyomissing, he was the son of the late Hiester H. and Anna (Miller) Muhlenberg.
Muhlenberg practiced for 40 years as a pediatrician at the Children's Clinic of Wyomissing, retiring in 1997.
He was a graduate of Mercersberg Academy in 1946; Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA 1950; University of Pennsylvania Medical School 1953; and interned at the Presbyterian Hospital, Philadelphia. He then served his residency at Children's Hospital, Philadelphia.
Muhlenberg was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing, where he served as a greeter.
He was the former Chief of Pediatrics at Reading Hospital.
Muhlenberg was a lifetime member of the Order of Cincinnati, Philadelphia.
He served on the board of directors for the following organizations: March of Dimes, Berks County Historical Society, Wyomissing Parks and Shade Tree Commission, Hawk Mountain and Camp Conrad Weiser.
Muhlenberg was the recipient of the Muhlenberg Leadership Award, Collegeville, for diversity of talent and dedication to the community. This award was initiated in honor of Henry M. Muhlenberg, the first Lutheran minister in Pennsylvania.
He was also a past secretary for the Wyomissing Public Library.
Muhlenberg is also survived by two daughters, Sarah M. (Muhlenberg) Grace, Wernersville and Martha M. (Muhlenberg) Doto, Downingtown. Other survivors include one sister Catherine (Muhlenberg) Smith, West Chester, PA. There are also 4 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, William H. Muhlenberg in 1990.
Memorial services will be Saturday, November 12 at 12:30 p.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church. Burial will be private in Charles Evans Cemetery. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is in charge of arrangements.
