Irene M. Schappell

Irene M. Schappell, 100 formerly of Hamburg died March 31, 2017 in Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township. She was the widow of Arlan F. Schappell who died October 26, 1996. Irene was born in Reading, PA and was the daughter of the late Arthur W. E. and Kathryn (Bilger) DeLong. She was a machine operator for 35 years at Hamburg Knitting Mill retiring in 1981. Irene was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, word search and gardening. A daughter, Carol A. wife of Richard Stine, Hamburg; two sons, David G. husband of Carol Schappell, Hamburg and Richard A. husband of Mary Schappell, Lenhartsville, and 13 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren survive Irene. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 6 th at 11:00 a.m. from the Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc. 40 S. 4 th Street, Hamburg, PA. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens.
