Ida Mae Morris was born on June 1, 1954 in Orangeburg South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Rebecca and the late Walter Slaughter Sr. Ida was the oldest daughter out of ten children: the late Walter Jr., Isaiah, Bertha, Yvonne, Denise, Loretta, Michael, Damien and the late John slaughter.Â
Ida and her family moved from Orangeburg South Carolina to Brooklyn Ny in 1957. There she attended Thomas Jefferson High School and met the late Phillip Morris. Ida married Phillip on August 12, 1978 and out of their Union the late Raheem, the late Kareem, Lisa, Hakim and Khaliah Morris.Â
Ida attended the College of New Rochelle where she received her bachelors degree. She was employed at John Edward Bruce Daycare Center, where she worked for over 20 years before retirement. While living in NYC she was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. In 2010 Ida moved her children from Nyc to Reading, PA. Their she joined Bethel A.M.E Church where she was also a very active member.Â
Ida loved to cook she frequently cooked for her family, friends and the church congregation. She also loved to dance and was always found on the dance floor at any social event. Ida was the person that the whole family would come to for help and guidance. She also helped her church family with fundraising, she taught Sunday school, she sang in the choir and volunteered any way she could to help. She was an amazing grandmother helping her children raise her grandchildren. She was also very feisty, telling you how it was and helping you along the way.Â
Ida was hospitalized on August 23 2016, she departed on August 30, 2016.
She leaves to cherish her memory: children Lisa Slaughter-Morris, Hakim Morris and Khaliah Morris. Siblings Isaiah, husband of Beverly Deas-Slaughter; Bertha L. Davia; Denise, wife of Jarvis Ricks; Yvonne Whittingham, Loretta, wife of Rohan Bryden; Micheal, husband of Rosemary Slaughter. Sister-in-law Barbara Kleinfeldt; Beatrice Smitherman; Pamela Nelson. 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Nieces. nephews, cousins and a host of friends.Â
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 4 p.m. in Bethal AME Church, 330 W Windsor St, Reading, PA 19601. Viewing will be held from 12 to 4 p.m. in the church. Burial will be Wednesday September 7, 2016 in Rosehill Cemetery, Linden NJ. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
