Horace V. Bewley

Horace V. "Hossy" Bewley, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at 9:55 a.m. in Berks Heim, where he had been a resident for four years.

He was the widower of Beatrice G. (Santilli) Bewley, who passed away June 27, 1998.

Born in West Reading, February 19, 1926, he was a son of the late Christian S. and Clara (Boyd) Bewley.

Mr. Bewley was self employed in sales and home improvements.

Horace was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II in the invasion of France, and was also stationed in the Pacific, saw action at Bougainville, and was credited with bringing down an enemy plane.

Hossy was quite a character, bringing lots of laughs to all those whom he knew. He was also an avid hunter.

He is survived by his son, James F., and his wife, Catherine A. (Snyder) Bewley, Hamburg; his daughter, Teresa A. (Bewley), wife of Michael J. DeVanney, Leesport; his granddaughters, Ivy C., Angela F. and Margaret A. Bewley, all of Hamburg and his grandson, Christian C. Bewley, Fleetwood.

He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Jesse and Margaret Bewley, Estero, FL; Harold and Verna Bewley, Reading; brother Alvin Bewley, Shillington; sister, Shirley, wife of Donald Wahl, Whitfield, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition, also surviving is his friend and loving companion, Marie Kummerer, Leesport.

He was predeceased by siblings, Pearl, Hazel, Dot, Virgie, Mildred, Harry and Evelyn.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Berks Heim, where Hossy was family and enjoyed his residency.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Chapel of Resurrection at Gethsemane Cemetery, 3139 Kutztown Road, Muhlenberg Township. Viewings will be held Sunday evening from 6:30-8:00 p.m. and again Monday from 9:00-9:30 a.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery.
