Herbert L. Erb

Herbert Luther Erb, Jr., 93, formerly of Fleetwood, died August 30, 2009 at 6:25 pm in the Highlands at Wyomissing, skilled care unit, where he had been a patient since June 21, 2007.

He was married July 21, 1944 to the late Mary Alice (Kutz) Erb, who died August 24, 2001.

Born in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County on April 10, 1916, he was a son of the late Dr. Herbert L. Erb, Sr., and Anna Maria (Seltzer) Erb.

He was a 1934 graduate of Orwigsburg High School, 1938 graduate of Gettysburg College and a graduate of Lehigh University with a Masters Degree in Education Administration. Herbert also did additional graduate work at Pennsylvania State University, Colgate University and Albright College.

Herbert was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing.

He was an Army Veteran of WWII, honorably serving as a 1st Lieutenant; participating in the conflict in India.

Herbert was a 7th and 8th grade Math and Social Studies teacher at Oley High School from 1939 to 1941.

He later served as a math teacher at Fleetwood High School from 1957 until 1967 and also served as the assistant high school principal from 1965 until 1967.

Herbert last worked 14 years as the Principal of Fleetwood Middle School, before retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Fleetwood School Board, Town Council, Rotary Club, Masons, board member of the Fleetwood Cemetery and was active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fleetwood.

Herbert is survived by three children: Stephen K., husband of Nancy A. (Hetherington) Erb of Absecon, N.J.; Mary F. (Erb), wife of Jack W. Bennett of Heathrow, FL., and Susan E. (Erb), wife of Robert J. Burns of Troy, MI.

Other survivors include 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter; Linda Margaret (Erb) Jannke, who died February 19, 1997 and his sisters: Margaret E. (Erb) Bowen and Frances S. (Erb) Walborn.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 am in Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 am in the church. Burial will be in Fleetwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Herbert L. Erb Scholarship Fund for the Outstanding 8th Grade Student at the Fleetwood Middle School, 407 North Richmond Street, Fleetwood, PA 19522.
