Herbert A. Schmehl, 97, formerly of Greenfields, died December 19, 2009 at 4:25 p.m. in The Lutheran Home at Topton, Longswamp Township.
He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Buckley) Schmehl who died March 13, 1998.
Born September 4, 1912 in Reading, he was a son of the late Alvin and Minnie G. (Lengle) Schmehl.
Herbert attended Ontelaunee High School.
He was employed as a foreman in the motor repair department of Berks Engineering for 20 years. Subsequently he became part owner of Reading Electric Motor Service for 25 years.
Herbert was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Glenside.
He was a charter member of both Virginville and Greenfields Fire Companies.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth H., husband of Wendy M. (Holt) Schmehl of Fleetwood and Robert D., husband of Doris (Kolesar) Schmehl of Wyomissing.
Other survivors include two brothers, Clayton Schmehl of Bethel and Leon Schmehl of Muhlenberg Township.
There are also four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter surviving.
Herbert was predeceased by a daughter Judith A. Schmehl, two brothers, Clarence and Marvin Schmehl and a sister Miriam (Schmehl) Kurtz.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township.
