Harriett J. Janssen

Harriett J. (Burkholder) Janssen, 85, passed away, Thursday, May 2, 2024, in her West Reading residence.

She was the loving wife of Guenther G. "Jim" Janssen. They were married for 65 years.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Mark and Lillian (McQuate) Burkholder of Newmanstown, PA.

She was a 1956 graduate of Elco High School.

Harriett embarked on her professional journey through a position at American Casualty Insurance Company in Reading. After her next career – motherhood - she returned to the workforce via the fashion industry and then transitioned into the hospitality industry with time spent at a local travel agency and two area hotels. However, her true passion lay in making a positive impact on the lives of others, particularly senior citizens. This led her to establish her own company, Encore Tours, which provided bus trips and cruise excursions for mainly elderly guests. She ended her employment years with The Lutheran Home at Topton, again helping those in need.

Harriett's family will forever cherish the memory of her as a compassionate and extraordinary woman who consistently wore a warm smile and spoke kind words. She actively participated in her children and grandchildren's lives. Being "Gram", "Grammi" brought her tremendous joy. The family will always hold dear the special moments they shared. Harriett's daily life was enriched by the presence of her beloved family and so many special friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Lisa, wife of Daniel Hagenman, Voorhees, NJ; and Michael Janssen, West Reading, husband of Kathleen Janssen; and five grandchildren: Kyle and Justin Hagenman, and Emily, Rachel, and Alex Janssen.

In Harriett's words for us to remember her by "There will be no services for me; so, at this time I ask you to take a moment of silence and rejoice the fact that I have found eternal peace. God be with you."
