Harold Edward Sell, 78, of Spring Township, died as a result of complications from ALS, (Lou Gehrig's Disease), September 20, 2008 at 4:02 am in ManorCare Health Services, Inc., Spring Township, where he had been a patient since September 8th.
He was the husband of Alice Mae (Allwine) Sell, whom he married August 10, 1952.
Born in Reading, PA on April 24, 1930, he was a son of the late Harold Alfred Sell and Dorothy Jeanette (Smith) Sell.
He was a 1948 graduate of Reading High School and attended East Stroudsburg University.
Harold was employed for 38 years as a salesman with the General Electric Supply Company, Reading, retiring in 1990, where he was a seven time member of the Drummer's Club organization, which consists of the top 10% of the nation's salesman.
He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn.
Harold loved baseball and was a member of the following championship teams: Hillside Midgets, Northeast Jr. High (1945), Reading High School, Olivets and the Legion Team of Gregg Post #12 - State Champions 1947. Harold was known for his dominating curve ball.
He was also a little league baseball coach for a number of years with Midvale Manor and Sinking Spring and was also an assistant coach with the Lincoln Park Midgets Football organization.
Harold was a life member of the Reading-Berks Basketball Oldtimers and was inducted in 1997 as a member of the Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, a member of the PA Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the American Legion Gregg Post #12.
He was an avid woodworker, making many items for his family and friends, including his famous turtle benches. He also completely finished his summer log home in Clinton County, which has had for the last 23 years.
Harold also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden; sharing its yield with everyone.
He is survived by three children: Bradley A., husband of Kimberly N. (Williams) Sell of Raleigh, NC; Cheryl A., wife of Eric T. Behrenshausen of Mount Holly Springs, Cumberland County and Wendy L., wife of David B. Reinert of Spring Township.
Other survivors include a sister, Mary L. Yoder of Spring Township, four grandchildren: Lindsay A. Behrenshausen, Derek A. Behrenshausen, Megan L. Sell and Brian A. Sell and two step-grandchildren: Erik S. Reinert and Justin D. Reinert.
Services will be Tuesday at 11:00 am in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, with Rev. William E. Zimmerman officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Entombment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Spring Township.
