Harold Y Hoppes

Harold Y. Hoppes, 86, of Oley Township, died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient since February 17, 2014.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anna May (Dunn) Hoppes, formerly of Exeter Township.

Born in Oley Township on March 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Paul A. Hoppes and Annie S. Hoppes.

He graduated from Oley Valley High School in 1945. After serving honorably as a private in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946, he attended and graduated from the Reading Business Institute, Reading, and became a certified public accountant. After working for accountant, Jerome A. LaManna, Reading, for several years, he began work in 1955 as an accountant with Boyertown Packaging Service Corp., Boyertown, rising to the position of Treasurer. He retired in 1991 from the same company, then known as Hargro Flexible Packaging Corp.

He was a life-long, active member of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oley, where for many years he was a Sunday School teacher and also served on church council.

He was an avid fan of Oley Valley High School sports, and traveled extensively with his wife and friends in his retirement.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are his brother, Daniel Y. Hoppes, Oley. Also surviving are three children: Sharon L. Hoppes, of Hagerstown, Md.; Dr. Kimberly A. Hoppes, wife of Dr. John E. Jannes, of New York City; and Andrew P. Hoppes, husband of Holly J. Herman, of Wayne, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are three grandsons: Ethan M. Jannes, Peter D. Jannes and Adam R. Hoppes.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing and memorial service to be held at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1076 Memorial Highway, Oley, on Saturday, March 8, 2014, with the viewing from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by the service. Interment will follow at Friedens Cemetery, Oley. A luncheon will follow at the church.

The Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc, Main Street, Oley, is in charge of arrangements.
