Gregory Paul "Woody" Weckel, 68, originally of Philadelphia, PA, but most recently of Leesport, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 8, 2017. He was the loving husband of Elizabeth (Andruzak) Jackson Weckel, with whom he celebrated 25 years of marriage.
Greg was born on February 2, 1949, in Philadelphia at the former Woman's Hospital. He was the son of the late Charles and Evelyn Weckel. Greg graduated from Hamilton High School West, located in New Jersey. He was a member of the class of 1967. He furthered his education at the Pennsylvania Military College (which is now Widener University), where he earned his science degree in 1971. He also played football while at college. Greg earned his nickname "Woody" for his intense passion and antics on the football field.
Greg was a dedicated teacher of physics and calculus with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for 46 years. He also coached football for over 35 years. His years of service in the field of education included the following locations: Roman Catholic High in Philadelphia; Bishop Egan-Conwell Egan in Fairless Hills; Holy Name High School (now Berks Catholic High School) in Reading; St. Pius X, in Pottstown; and Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, in Royersford. Greg loved his students and football players. He devoted his life to helping his students and players achieve success.
In his spare time, Greg enjoyed writing on his favorite subjects, physics and calculus. Greg also enjoyed NASCAR, but football was his life. He loved everything about high school football because it was a sport at it purest. He loved spending time in Worlds End State Park. He is also known for his great sense of humor. He loved to laugh (sometimes at inappropriate times). Most of all, he enjoyed being "Pop-Pop" to Madalynn and "Grandpop" to Juliet. He simply enjoyed spending time with his beloved family.
Greg is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in law, Gregory, Jr., and Cindy Weckel, and their daughter, Juliet. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Hope (Jackson) Walter, and his granddaughter Madalynn. His brother, Leonard Weckel, husband of Bryn, also survives Greg. Greg was predeceased by his grandson, Justin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 17, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 256 Swamp Pike, Schwenksville, PA 19473. A visitation will be held Sunday, July 16, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. in Pope John Paul II High School, 181 Rittenhouse Rd, Royersford, PA 19468 and on Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, it was Greg's intent that everyone should "love what you do, do what you love, and passionately fight for what you believe in."
Greg proudly lived by these mottos: "Onward and upward to bigger and better things" and "Quick like little bunnies."
