Gregory L. Portner

Gregory Lee "Greg" Portner, 73, of Wyomissing passed away unexpectedly on New Year's Eve, in Mt. Dora, FL, where he was planning to retire.

Born on November 17, 1950, he was the son of Walter R. Portner (Connie Aker) and Betty E. Portner. He was the husband and best friend of Dolores E. Portner (Schoennegal) for 32 Years.

He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Alexandra "Lexy" Portner.

He was a 1968 graduate of Reading High School and graduated from Albright College with a Bachelor's of Science in Accounting. He was employed by Hydrojet, Reading, PA.

Greg, who was lovingly referred to as "Grandpop" by his grandchildren, was a proud and caring father, grandfather and husband whom everyone could rely on in any situation - whether it be home improvement, technical, financial, or legal. He carried his tools everywhere with him and was always ready and willing to help fix or investigate the source of a problem.

An involved member in many communities, Greg had been active for most of his life in Scouting; being a Den Leader, Lodge Advisor, and member of the Hawk Mountain Council Executive Board. For several years, he served on the Wyomissing School Board and Wyomissing Borough Council.

He was previously a President of the Berks County Amateur Astronomical Society and loved viewing the wonders of space through his telescope. He obtained his Pilot's License in the 90's and would often take friends and family for flights above Berks County.

Greg enjoyed diverse activities and was always busy with many hobbies, whether it was painting, taking photographs, enjoying outdoor concerts, reading books on military history, hunting, helping family members with various household projects, or smoking a cigar on a summer evening. He had an admirable sense of humor and was always joking around. He instilled his love of good music in all his children. He was an avid fan of Star Trek and The Three Stooges.

Greg was the loving and proud father of Holly A. (George Shattuck), Reading, PA, Michele L. (Zachary Norman), Reading, PA, and Brant J. Portner (Kristen Cease), Lebanon, PA. In addition to his wife, three children and parents, he is survived by his sisters, Donna Portner, (Bruce Lutz), Wernersville, PA, Linda Coller (Eric Siegfried), Wernersville, PA, Karen Levi (Jonathan), Fort Wayne, IN, and Kathy Portner (Jay Sweitzer), Stevens, PA, grandchildren, Joshua and Trevor Koontz, Christian Miller, Jacob Albritton, and Harrison, Luke and Claire Shattuck, and great-grandson, Giovanni Koontz, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nephews and great-nieces.
