Grace I. Romain

Grace I. (Whitmoyer) Romain, age 101, formerly of West Reading, died on October 4, 2021, at Columbia Cottage, Wyomissing, where she had resided since August of 2019. Her husband, Peter P. Romain, died on February 14, 1999.

Born in Brownsville, she was a daughter of the late Leon F. and Florence H (Krick) Whitmoyer.

Grace was a member of the Wilson High School, West Lawn, Class of 1938.

She initially worked for her cousin Margaret and her husband for four years caring for their young son and helping with cooking and cleaning.

Grace started working at the Berkshire Knitting Mills in 1942. She worked there for 34 years. It is where she and Pete met. When the "Berkie" closed, she transferred to Vanity Fair Outlet, working there another 10 years until retiring in 1986.

She was an avid Phillies fan.

Grace was a life-long member of St. John's Hains Church, Wernersville.

Grace was always happy, and had a smile for everyone. She especially loved children, even though she never had any of her own, and would always stop and talk with them. She loved doing puzzles, reading books and the newspaper, but due to failing eyesight from macular degeneration in her later years was unable to do those activities anymore. She also enjoyed trips to casinos, usually winning more than she spent, and playing Bingo and scratch-off Lottery tickets. She took her 1st airplane ride at the age of 93, returning from a trip to Florida with her niece Ginny and her husband Dennis. Her attitude about starting Hospice Care as her health was failing was "Well, nobody lives forever" and "There's no sense worrying about things you can't change".

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her older brother Charles Whitmoyer, who died in infancy, and her younger sister, Fern (Whitmoyer) Clouser, who died in 1976.

Grace is survived by her niece, Virginia (Clouser) Klinger, wife of Dennis Klinger, who assisted her with her daily needs over the years since Pete's passing; and her niece, Theresa Kasper and her children. She is also survived by her great-nephews, Aaron and Mark Klinger; and several cousins.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Columbia Cottage and to her dear friend Margene, who was always willing to help her during her stay there, and the staff of Caring Hospice, who provided care and support for her in her final weeks.

Graveside services will be Monday, October 25, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
