Gerard J. Didyoung, 70, of North 25th Street, Pennside, a former teacher, sports coach and municipal official, died of natural causes July 25 at 1:30 p.m. in his residence.
He was the husband of Geraldine M. (Smith) Didyoung.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Frederick and Catherine (Miller) Didyoung.
Didyoung had been an elementary school teacher in the Reading School District from 1968 until 1992. He previously worked as an insurance agent with the Didyoung Agency, Reading.
He was a member of St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Mount Penn, where he served as lector, Eucharist minister and business manager.
Didyoung was a 1951 graduate of Central Catholic High School, a 1955 graduate of St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, and received a master's degree in education from Kutztown University in 1972.
He was an Army veteran.
Didyoung served as parochial league football coach for the city CYO league, assistant football coach and former treasurer of the boosters club of Central Catholic High School and assistant baseball coach at Reading High School.
He was a former township supervisor for Lower Alsace Township and later township tax collector.
Didyoung served as manager of Antietam Pool from 1978 until 1988.
He is also survived by a daughter, Mary Jo (Didyoung) Fick, Pennside, and two sons, James G., Pennside, and Frederick J., Whitehall, Lehigh County.
Other survivors include four sisters: Patricia D. (Didyoung) Wentling, Wyomissing; Catherine D. (Didyoung) Wright, Pennside; Margaret D. (Didyoung) Giering, Exeter Township; and Elizabeth D. (Didyoung) Hurleman, Mount Penn.
There are also 10 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Catharine of Siena, Exeter Township. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
