Gerald D. Wagner

Gerald D. Wagner, 90, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the loving husband of Joanne (Thren) Wagner. They celebrated 20 years of marriage this year.

Born in Mohrsville on November 18, 1932, he was a son of the late Edgar and Joyce (Dise) Wagner. Gerry graduated from Reading High School (Class of 1950) before completing a B.S. at Ithaca College (1954) and Masters in Education at Temple University (1956). He enlisted in the Army after college, and his unit was stationed in Poiteau, France. An accomplished musician, he played the French horn in Army's symphony orchestra during his service. In the years to follow, he played in the Reading Symphony, the Reading Pops Orchestra, the Pottstown Band, and the Encore Senior Orchestra. He dedicated over 35 years to teaching music in public schools, mostly in Reading. He retired in 1993.

Gerald was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Joanne; sister-in-law Sister Joelle Thren, SCC; nieces, Jeanne Wagner and Diana Ahmadi (husband Gholam), and nephew, Dr. George Dougherty. He is survived by additional nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews throughout the US.

He was preceded in death by brothers, James H. and Eugene F. Wagner; and sisters, Harriet Wagner and Marion Dougherty.

A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc. 739 Penn Avenue West Reading, PA 19611. Friends and relatives are invited to gather at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Laureldale Cemetery in Reading.
