Gerald A. Alvarez, 76, passed away peacefully, August 1, 2012, surrounded by his loving family in his Spring Township residence.
He was the devoted husband of Judith A. (Miller) Alvarez.
Born in Jersey City, NJ, he was a son of the late Joseph S. and Ruth (Wandle) Alvarez.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict.
Jerry worked for Wilson School District and Phoebe Berks. He was previously employed by Anchor Motor Freight, Newark, NJ; Miller Pontiac -Cadillac, Rahway, NJ and retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Rahway, NJ in 1998.
He was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church, West Lawn.
Jerry was a wonderful golfer, earning a golf scholarship in high school, a bowler, bowling a perfect 300, and was an avid pinochle player. He enjoyed his family trips to the Jersey Shore for fishing and crabbing. He was an incredible man, a wonderful husband and a loving father and grandfather. His family meant the world to him and he will be dearly missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: James J. Jr., husband of Sherri Reynolds, GA; Karen M., wife of Danny Aloy, FL; Kathy P., wife of Michael Melnyk, Sinking Spring and Kristen S. Carlson, South Heidelberg Township. Also surviving are his 12 grandchildren: Jimmy III, Jamie, Rachel, Brittany, Derek, Cody, Colin, Alexis, Colby, Julie, Joe and Sam. Jerry would have been a great-grandfather this coming January. He will be missed by his 16 year old yellow lab, Pennsy and many other loving family and friends.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Ginny; his sister, Regina Gesell and his brother, Donald Alvarez.
A Celebration of Life will be Friday at 12 p.m. in West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave., West Lawn, PA 19609. A visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Lawn United Methodist Church at the above address or to Temple Lung Center, 3401 N. Broad St., Ste 710, Philadelphia, PA 19140.
