George Zeppos, 75, a prominent Berks basketball figure, died Dec. 14 at 3:40 p.m. in Berkshire Center, Exeter Township, where he had been a patient since Nov. 30.
Zeppos, Exeter Township, was the husband of Shirley M. (Angstadt) Zeppos.
Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late Constantine and Constantina (Stasinos) Zeppos.
Zeppos had been employed for 25 years as a truck driver by R.M. Palmer Co., West Reading, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Reading.
Zeppos was a 1948 graduate of Reading High School.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Zeppos was a well-known basketball official in Berks County and was inducted into the Berks County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
He officiated four district championship games, was one of only six officials in Berks history to work games spanning five decades and was a college official for 15 years, including games on the Division I level.
As a star player on the city league basketball circuit, Zeppos helped lead the Reading Hellenic Hoopsters to a state title in 1951, played on six different city championship squads and either won or placed in the top five in six regional and national competitions during the 1950s.
Zeppos was a member of the Reading-Berks Basketball Oldtimers Association and worked as a scout for the Washington Senators professional baseball franchise.
He is also survived by a sister, Angeline (Zeppos) Monos, Reading.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in SS. Constantine and Helen Church. Viewing 9am until time of service in the church. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
