George D. Sobresky

George D. Sobresky, Democratic mayor of Laureldale since 1982, died July 9 in his residence on Belmont Avenue, Laureldale.

Sobresky, 83, was the husband of Arlene M. (Graybill) Sobresky.

He served for many years on borough council before becoming mayor.

Born in Pottstown, he was a son of the late Joseph and Julia (Suchoza) Zabrecky.

Sobresky was employed for 23 years as a piping analyst by Gilbert Associates, Reading, retiring in 1982.

He was a 1937 graduate of Pottstown High School and attended the University of Utah, Pennsylvania State College and Drexel University.

An Army veteran of World War II, Sobresky was a prisoner of war of the Germans and received the Purple Heart and Bronze and Silver stars.

Sobresky was a past president of the Berks County Mayors Association and a past president and secretary of the Muhlenberg Lions Club.

He was a past commander of Shoemakersville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8425 and Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1, Reading, and a past vice commander of Charles Steele American Legion Post 622, Laureldale.

Sobresky was one of the founders and a past vice president of the Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association.

He was a life member of Muhlenberg VFW Post 5234, Disabled American Veterans Post 10, Reading; Military Order of the Purple Heart; 34th Bomb Group; 82nd Airborne Association and Reading-Berks Basketball Old-Timers Association.

He taught Sunday School at Rosedale United Church of Christ, Laureldale, for six years.

Sobresky is also survived by a daughter, Kathy G. (Sobresky) Christman, Laureldale.

Other survivors include a sister, Ann (Sobresky) Shute, Pottstown; and a granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton.
