Dr. George R. Matthews, a retired radiologist and community leader, died Oct. 8 in the Highlands at Wyomissing Skilled Nursing Unit, where he had been a patient since Sept. 20.
Matthews, 90, a resident at the Highlands at Wyomissing for the past eight years, was the husband of Sara (Kaufman) Matthews.
A former general practitioner in Laureldale, he became the Reading Hospital's first resident in radiology in 1948 and its second practicing radiologist on the completion of his residency.
Matthews served as chairman of the hospital's radiology department until his retirement in 1985.
Serving on various boards of charitable organizations, he was board chairman at the Lutheran Home at Topton for many years.
Matthews was one of the founding members and first board chairman that oversaw the creation of the Highlands at Wyomissing.
Born in Paoli, Chester County, he was a son of the late James G. and C. Gertrude (Davis) Matthews.
Matthews was a 1936 graduate of Ursinus College, Montgomery County, and a 1940 graduate of the Temple University Medical School.
He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.
Matthews was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing.
He is also survived by a son, Michael L., Lafayette Hill, Montgomery County; and two daughters, Mary M. (Matthews) Cloues, Lower Gwynedd Township, Montgomery County, and Sara Matthews, Newtown Square, Delaware County.
Other survivors include a brother, James G. Jr., Paoli.
There are also six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Memorial services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church. Burial will be private. Contributions may be made to the Benevolent Care Program of The Lutheran Home at Topton 1 South Home Avenue Topton, PA 19562 or The Opportunity House of Reading 430 North 2nd Street Reading, PA 19601. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
