George M. Manderbach

George M. Manderbach, 94, of Wyomissing, passed away January 9, 2017, in the Highlands at Wyomissing.

His wife, Dorothy L. (Moyer) Manderbach died on August 22, 1991.

Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late George D. and Clara Manderbach.

He was a 1940 graduate from the new Wyomissing High School. George started his athletic career at the Happy Hollow playground as a playground leader. Later at Wyomissing he was a standout basketball and track star. In basketball he was a member of the 1940 county championship team. In track he held the Berks County Discus record for a period of time and was also the Berks County champion. He graduated from Albright College in 1946 where he played basketball, and Dickinson School of Law in 1948.

George was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the South Pacific as a morse code radio operator during WWII. He received two Bronze Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal..

He was a practicing attorney until joining his father at George D. Manderbach, Inc. in the automobile business.

George was a member of St. James Church, West Reading, where he was an active, long-time member.

He was also a member of the Berks County Bar Association for 65 years, served on the West Reading Borough Council, as well as the Lincoln Mercury National Dealer Council.

George is survived by three children: Gary M., husband of Beaverlea Manderbach, Sinking Spring; Sherra L., wife of Michael Howard, Liberty Center, OH; and Cricket (Lynn), husband of Jeannie Manderbach, Mohnton. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two siblings, Robert and Mary Ellen.

Service will be Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 11 a.m. in St James Church, 644 Penn Ave, West Reading. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading and Saturday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Armed Forces Brotherhood, c/o George Manderbach, P.O. Box 374, Temple, PA 19560 (funds to be used for local veterans), or Animal Rescue League, P.O.
