Genevieve (Ziemba) Simon, fondly known as Vig, died peacefully Monday October 2, 2017, at the age of 93 surrounded and comforted by her family.
The daughter of Polish immigrants, she was one of nine siblings raised in Reading, PA. Vig came of age during the Great Depression and WW II. Her experiences during those trying and often bleak years forged the principles by which she led her life, self-reliant and independent to the end.
She was known for her great sense of humor and willingness to help others. She enjoyed bingo, cooking, bus trips, and being with her family.
Vig graduated from St. Peter's Catholic High School in 1942. She received her RN from St. Joseph's School of Nursing. During that time she earned a scholarship to Catholic University in Washington DC. It was while employed as a nurse that she met Dr. Peter Novey and married him in 1949. They spent their early years in West Virginia providing medical care to coal miners.
Vig was widowed at the early age of thirty three. She later met and married Casper Simon in 1961. Together they ran West Lawn Printing Company. In her later years she was a teacher's aide at Spring Township Day-Care Center.
Vig was preceded in death by her parents Luke and Angela Ziemba; her husband Casper Simon; her siblings Sophia Hoppe, John, Jack, Annie Hill, Fr. Anthony, Jennie Mulligan, and Stella Radwanski.
She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her brother Edward Ziemba (Mary Jane); her children Antoinette McCormick (Alan), Angela Robertson (Jeffrey), Michael Novey (Janet); her grandchildren Kim Parise (Phil), Sean McCormick, Luke Novey, and Eric Novey; and her great grandchildren McKenzie, Charlotte, and Andrew Parise.
A visitation will be held Monday, October 9, 2017, from 12 to 1 p.m. with a service beginning at 1 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
