Gene H. Bowers

Gene H. Bowers, 87, of S. Heidelberg Township, passed away in his home on Monday, March 4, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Deborah J. (Hill), with whom he would have celebrated 38 years of marriage on April 26.

Born in West Reading to the late Harry L. and Mary L. (Yost) Bowers, Gene graduated from West Reading High School in 1954 before serving his country honorably in the United States Navy. He served Berks County for many years as a tax auditor, and Gene was instrumental in the establishment of Berks EIT. He retired from there in 1988.

Gene was a natural storyteller, full of good humor and wit. He loved following the Eagles, Penn State Football, and college basketball. He enjoyed golfing for many years and traveling both home and abroad with his wife and grandchildren. Gene was a very proud Pop Pop to his nine grandchildren, and he especially treasured his great granddaughter.

Gene's memory will be kept by the love of his life, Debbie; his children: Joseph A. Bowers of Harrisburg; Mark J. Bowers (Susan) of Sinking Spring; Brenda L. Bowers of Wernersville; and Joanne M. Koehler of Reinholds; grandchildren: Alek, Kory (Tristyn), Erik, Will, Colleen, Nate, Alyssha, Carlie, and Stephanie; great granddaughter, Leah. He is also survived by his brother, John Bowers (Lori) of Wyomissing; his sisters, Bonnie Perlaki (Thomas) of Laureldale and Janice Konnick (Richard) of Shillington; nieces, Allison and Stacy; and nephew, Nicholas.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Gary.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gene's memory may be offered to a charity of choice.

Funeral services for Gene will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading PA 19611. Visitation and viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the services. Committal will be held privately at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
