Frederick L. Homsher, 79, of Wyomissing, died Friday, September 15th in Fairfax, VA surrounded by his family.
Born on March 21, 1938 to Irene Hensel Homsher and Joseph B. Homsher, Fred grew up in Baltimore, MD before moving to Wyomissing Hills in 1951. He graduated from Wyomissing High School in 1955. Fred attended Lehigh University where he played Varsity Baseball and his senior year was team captain and MVP. He graduated in 1959 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering and began his career with Carpenter Steel (CarTech) as a metallurgist. Fred remained with the company for 32 years, traveling internationally and leading a team to bring a Rotary Forge online, a project of which he was very proud. He was a member of the American Society of Metals.
On July 23, 1960 at Atonement Lutheran Church Fred married Barbara Koch of Wyomissing Hills. Over the years he was active in the Reading Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Board of Directors, played American Legion baseball, was a two-term Wyomissing Hills Borough Council Member, Chair of the Wyomissing Hills Recreation Board; and President of the Southeastern Lehigh University Alumni Club. Fred was an avid sports fan who loved attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He also loved to hunt and fish, spending many hours with family and special friends in the woods and on his boat. He reveled in his nickname "Clyde the Guide."
After a rewarding career at CarTech, Fred retired at the young age of 52. In retirement he and Barbara spent most of their summers at the family cottage in Blue Sea Lake, Quebec, Canada. They went on many wonderful trips and drove up and down the mid-Atlantic cheering on their grandchildren at sporting events and supporting their academic endeavors. Fred became active in the CarTech retirement group and supported Barbara in her extensive volunteer work. His greatest joy was spending time with extended family and friends.
Fred is survived by his wife of 57 years Barbara (Koch) Homsher, his brother Joseph B. Homsher, children Cindy Homsher Wildermuth and husband Robin, Pam Homsher Promisel and husband Andy, and Peter Homsher, 7 grandchildren; Claire Wildermuth Sadler and husband Tom, Chad Wildermuth, Grace Wildermuth, Michael Promisel and wife Marlee, Jake Promisel, David Promisel and Caroline Homsher, and great grandson Lincoln Sadler. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Henry M. Koch, Jr., and wife Pattie.
