Frederic J. Hammes

Frederic J. Hammes, Jr., 91, of Shillington, died January 24, 2012 in Reading Hospital.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Frederic J. and Ethel (Snyder) Hammes.

He was a decorated veteran of WWII, where he served as a Sgt. in the Intelligence & Reconaissance Platoon attached to the 9th Army. Fred was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars for his valiant heroism in war. Throughout the war Fred served most of his time behind enemy lines.

Fred was a car manager at various local automobile dealerships until his retirement.

He was a founding member of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church.

Fred is survived by his son Frederic J. Hammes, III; and three siblings, Eloise Hammes, Reading, Marcella H. Boland, Wyomissing and Donald Hammes, Green Hills.

He was predeceased by two siblings, Dorothy Hammes and Frank Hammes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Benedict's Church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the mass in the church.
