Francis Leroy Mcdonald

Francis L. "Mac" McDonald, 86, of Reading, died on Saturday morning, April 27, 2013 at Mifflin Court, Shillington, where he resided for the past 2 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth L. (Loeper) McDonald, with whom he was happily married from October 11, 1969 until her death in October, 2007.

Born in Philadelphia on July 11, 1926, he was a son of the late George and Mary Ellen (Spear) McDonald.

Francis attended North Catholic High School in the Frankford section of Philadelphia and answered the call of duty enlisting in the Marines at the age of 17 in July of 1943. He served during WWII in the Pacific Theater as a Corporal with the Sixth Marine Division. His missions took him to Okinawa, Guam, and Mariana Island. Frank was employed by Honeywell in Fort Washington, PA and retired after 30 years. A devout member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Reading, he was most proud of his marine service and Irish heritage. He loved watching old movies and TV sports.

He is survived by his youngest brother, Edward McDonald of Philadelphia and was predeceased by his brothers William, Joseph, George, Leonard, Robert, Raymond and a sister, Alice McDonald.

He is also survived by Betty's family: Marie Loeper, Reading; Virginia Arentz, Greenfields; LaRue Loeper, Temple, Robert & Jeanette Rubright, Wyomissing; John & Margaret Jean Loeper, Spring Township; Philip & Helen Loeper, Albuquerque, NM; and Thomas & Margaret Loeper. Richmond, VA.

Uncle Mac is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Nieces, Janet A. Jackson and Karen A. Sterner provided him with caring support for the past 6 years.

Mac's friendly spirit endeared him to all of the staff at Mifflin Court who became his new family. Their special attention along with hospice care provided much comfort in his final days.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 1 p.m. in St. Margaret's R.C. Church, 925 Centre Avenue, Reading, PA 19601. A viewing will be held Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: St. Margaret's R.C. Church at the above address.
