Fern E. Wertz

Fern Elizabeth Wertz, 80, of Wernersville, died April 21, 2012 in Henry Health Care Center at Phoebe Berks, Wernersville.

She was the wife of Frederick Robert Wertz, Jr. who died November 26, 1967.

Born March 7, 1932 in West Reading, she was a daughter of the late John Daniel and Ada Irene (Miller) Gehris.

Fern was a 1950 graduate of Reading High School.

She was employed in childcare and the cafeteria at Cornwall Terrace Elementary School for the Wilson School District for 15 years, retiring in 2010.

Fern was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Reading.

Surviving are two children: Susan D. Wertz of Virginia and Robert F., husband of Tracy (Weiler) Wertz of Lower Heidelberg Township.

Other survivors include two brothers, John D., husband of Barbara (DeTurk) Gehris of Mt. Penn and Robert K. Gehris of Whitehall.

In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren: Daniel, Brandon, Lacy, Heather, Brady and Caleb and four great granchildren.

Fern was predeceased by three siblings: Charles E. Gehris, James R. Gehris and Peggy Ann Strain.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:00. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township.
