Fern J. Carabello, 95, of Wyomissing, passed away March 4, 2014 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
Her husband, Dr. Charles A. Carabello, died in 1997.
Born June 30, 1918 in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Horning) Houck.
She was fourth in her graduating class of 1936 at Reading High School and class president for four years at Kutztown College, graduating with a BS in Elementary Education in 1948.
Fern was an avid supporter of the symphony. She was a member of the Reading Symphony board for many years; a chairwoman of Symphony Day at Stirling for 10 years; president of the Woman's Committee of the Symphony for 2 years; and a member of the Reading Symphony Music Committee. She was also active as a member of the Junior League, since 1952. She received the Outstanding Sustainer of the Year Award, was the Corresponding Secretary of Sustainers Advisory Council, and chaired dozens of committees for the Jr. League. She was also the past president of the Berks Arts Council.
She was a current member of St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, Whitfield, and a former member of Holy Rosary R.C. Church.
Fern is survived by her son, Blase A. Carabello, Houston, TX, and her daughter, Mary Jo, wife of Steve Smith, Fleetwood. Also surviving are her four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, John M. Carabello, in 1998.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, 2810 St Albans Dr, Sinking Spring. A visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Entombment will be private in Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Reading Symphony Orchestra, 147 N. 5th St., Reading, PA 19601. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhome.com.
