Evelyn Kennedy

Evelyn (McClain) Kennedy, 89, passed away on April 6, 2009 of natural causes at Columbia Cottage, Wyomissing, where she had been a resident since February 2008.

She was the beloved wife of Douglas O. Kennedy, Wyomissing, whom she married November 5, 1940. Evelyn and Doug were born and raised in Alabama and later lived in Muhlenberg Park, from 1960 until 2007.

Born October 2, 1919 in Dadeville, AL, she was a daughter of the late James L. and Daisy Belle (Walls) McClain.

Evelyn's employment spanned many years. This included positions with the federal government as she joined Doug when he was stationed stateside with the U.S. Army prior to going overseas during World War II. She was executive secretary to a Post Commander and an Adjutant General. In later years, she became a real estate agent.

Evelyn was a longtime member of Holy Cross United Methodist Church, Reading.

She is also survived by her three children Laura Kennedy, widow of Van C. Crouch of Bel Air, MD; Douglas O. Jr., husband of Christine Kennedy of Wyomissing Borough and Pamela K., wife of Frank M. Ferrara of Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County.

In addition there are eight grandchildren: Erin (Wadkins), wife of Jimmie Redmon and their children, Jimmie III and Paige; Shannon Wadkins, Douglas Kennedy III; Laurie (Kennedy), wife of Jason Woodward and their children Liam, Brody and Colby; Andrew Kennedy; Jacob Kennedy; Christina Ferrara and Frank Ferrara, Jr.

There is one sister, Betty (McClain) Simon of Jackson's Gap, AL also surviving.

Evelyn was predeceased by four siblings: Guy McClain, Mary (McClain) Cleveland, Edgar McClain and George McClain.

Graveside services will be private at Laureldale Cemetery. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale is in charge of arrangements.
