Evelyn "Evie" (Cardinal) Fick went to be with Jesus on February 5, 2024, after 93 years filled with love and family.
Born in 1930 in West Reading, Evie was the youngest child of the late Camillo and Margherita (DiGiacomo) Cardinal. She was raised alongside her five older siblings - the late Antoinette (Cardinal) Binder, Mary (Cardinal) Piscitelli, Peter Cardinal, Carmen Cardinal and Dolores (Cardinal) Harter. She was exceedingly proud to be a first generation Italian American and spoke often of the impact her family and heritage had on her life.
Evie was a 1948 graduate of West Reading High School, where she was a cheerleader and played basketball. As a teenager and young adult in the 1950s, she developed a love for getting all dolled up and for the rest of her life always made sure she had on a sassy outfit, a full face of make-up and rings on her fingers.
In 1951, Evie married the late John F. Fick, Sr. and spent the next 49 years with him making her laugh, in good times and bad. When John predeceased her, she was heartbroken and visited his grave daily for many years. Together, they were the loving parents of four children. Evie dedicated her life to raising her family and will be remembered as someone who loved her children and grandchildren fiercely, who would play games with them when they were young (even donning goalie pads to play goalie in net for hockey games in the family room as a young mother) and who would always answer the phone at any time of day or night to talk to or pray with them.
Evie was a member of GT Church in West Lawn for decades. Over the years, she devoted countless hours to serving the community through the church in many ways, including teaching 5-year-olds on Sundays, volunteering in the office and serving on the parking team for special events with her best friend, Jane Gerhart. Evie will be remembered as a true prayer warrior who spent hours every day covering her friends, family, and the community in prayer.
Evie is survived by her children: John F. Fick, Jr., husband of Jane; Dena L. (Fick) Torcivia, partner of Guy Hall; Peter J. Fick, husband of Jennica; and Andrew F. Fick, husband of Beth; grandchildren: Jason Fick, husband of Christina; David Fick, husband of Molly; Mary (Fick) Vu, wife of Viet; Andrea (Torcivia) Dascalescu, wife of David; Sara (Fick) Peek, wife of Travis; Rachel Torcivia, wife of Joseph Debraggio; Nora (Torcivia) Graczyk, wife of Bradley; AJ Fick, husband of Betsy; Amanda Fick-Cambria, wife of Zachary; Michael Fick; and Lucas Fick, fiancé of Samantha Perez; and great-grandchildren: Noah Fick, husband of Victoria; Sienna Adriano, wife of Josh; Emma Fick; Jude Fick; John Serrano; Elina Serrano; Jimmy McHale; Evan Peek; Olivia Dascalescu; Harrison Fick; Meadow Dascalescu; Evelyn Graczyk; June Fick; Lincoln Fick; Sofie Fick; Theodore Fick; Eleanor Graczyk; and Rita Debraggio. She also is survived by countless nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
Because of Evie's faith in Jesus and firm belief that she would be reunited with her husband and family in eternity, she lived her life to the fullest on Earth and, at the same time, anxiously awaited the wholeness of Heaven. Because of her confident hope, her friends and family can grieve with the knowledge that she is joyfully now with her Heavenly Father and loved ones.
Evie's family would like to offer its thanks to the wonderful staff at both Keystone Villa at Fleetwood and Berks Heim, who cared for her so well as her health, but not her spirit, began to fail her.
A Celebration of Evie's Life will be held on Friday, February 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home in West Reading. The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, February 9 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Internment at Berks Memorial Gardens will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Evie's name to Berks Heim Residency Program Account, Attention: Essick Commons Residents, P.O. Box 1495, Reading, PA 19603.
