Evelyn F. Mertz

Evelyn F. Mertz, 98, formerly of Laureldale and Reading, died Aug. 28 in the Quadrangle, Haverford, Montgomery County, an assisted living facility where she had been a resident since 1991.

Her husband, John G. Mertz, died June 19, 1976.

Born in East Coventry Township, Chester County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Elsie C. (Harley) Rinehart.

Mertz had been employed as an elementary school teacher in South Coventry Township, Chester County, and later by the Pottstown School District.

She later worked with her husband at his business, the John G. Mertz Funeral Home, now the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, in Laureldale.

Mertz was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading.

She was a 1926 graduate of West Chester Normal School.

Mertz is survived by a daughter, Marguerite A. Mertz, Philadelphia.

Services will be Wednesday at noon in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery.
