He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. A proud veteran of 20 years of service, he flew many missions as a pilot.
Following his military career, Eugene continued his passion for aviation as a commercial pilot. He flew for Eastern Airlines, U.S. Air Express, and later worked with charter aviation companies. His professionalism and skill in the air were matched only by his humility on the ground.
In addition to his aviation career, Eugene was an entrepreneur and businessman. He worked as a realtor with RE/MAX and was the owner of a Lawn Doctor franchise, taking pride in serving his community through his work.
Eugene was also deeply involved in youth development and the outdoors. He served as a dedicated 4-H leader for a rifle team, mentoring young people and sharing his knowledge and discipline. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and water skiing-activities that reflected his love of nature and time spent with family and friends.
Eugene was married to his beloved wife, Carolyn, on April 8, 1967. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and commitment. He was a loving father to his daughter, Janice M. MacKenzie, wife of Scott MacKenzie, and a proud grandfather to Alexander and Dylan MacKenzie, who brought him immense joy.
He is also survived by his sister, Marlene Maista, nieces- Maria Malone, Karen Larewnce, Nephew- Brian Clark and extended family and friends who will remember him for his steady presence, wisdom, and kindness.
Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Stephen M. Bonkoski, in 2000, as well as his parents, Zygmund and Irene (Lisczewski) Bonkoski.
