Ethan L. Trexler, M.D., 99, died Thursday, February 23, 2012 in Reading Hospital, where he was a patient since Sunday.
He resided at Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville since 1994. Prior to moving to Phoebe, he resided in Fleetwood, where he had a general medical practice for 41 years, retiring in 1980.
Born in Trexler, Albany Twp., PA, a son of the late William K. and Missouri (Lutz) Trexler, he was married to Katherine E. (Emmons) Trexler who predeceased him in 2003.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Carolyn T., wife of Walter R. Christ, Muhlenberg Township and Nancy G., widow of Rev. Dr. Larry Winkler, Longmont, Colorado.
Other survivors include 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and a sister, Pauline L. (Trexler), widow of Dr. Charles O. Tyler of Tinton, Falls, NJ.
He was predeceased by 6 brothers, Carl, Dr. Harold, Dr. Warren, Alvin, George and Miles Trexler and a sister, Roma Trexler.
Dr. Trexler was a 1929 graduate of Slatington High School, a 1933 graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and a 1938 graduate of Hahneman Medical College, after which he served an internship at Allentown Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII being discharged as a major.
Dr. Trexler was a member of Huquenot Lodge No. 377 F.&A.M., Kutztown, The Scottish Rite Bodies and the Rajah Temple, Fleetwood Fire Co. and Fleetwood American Legion Post.
He was a member of St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, Wernersville, and formerly St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Fleetwood, where he served as a former deacon.
He was also former chairman of the Fleetwood Borough Authority; Director Emeritus of the Fleetwood Bank, where he also served as Vice President in 1987 and Secretary in 1970. He served as a school director in the Fleetwood School District for 6 years; a member of the Board of Director of Berks County Mental Health Association from 1963-1966; member and former President of Berks County Medical Society, serving as chairman of the Committee on Discipline from 1974-1975; former member, President, Secretary and Treasurer of Berks County Chapter of American Academy of General Practice; former member of board of Directors, President and Treasurer of Pennsylvania Academy of General Practice, former member and delegate to the American Academy of General Practice.
During his practice he was on the active staff of the former Community General Hospital, serving on the Executive Committee from 1962-1964 as their Chief of Staff in 1963 and Medical Director in 1964, chairman of Department of General Practice and director of Medical Education from 1966-1974.
He was also on the courtesy staff of Reading Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center.
While accomplishing all of the above, he still found time to golf with Moselem Golf Club Old Goats, travel, lawn bowl and play bridge.
Services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at Phoebe Berks Village, 1 Reading Drive, Wernersville, PA 19565. Friends may call Monday evening from 6:30-8:00 at Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale and Tuesday morning from 10:00 until the time of service in the chapel at Phoebe. Burial will be in Fleetwood Cemetery, Fleetwood.
