Esther L. Carter, 87, of West Reading, died April 27, 2010 in the Villa St. Elizabeth, West Reading where she had resided since 2001.
Her husband, Frank M. Carter, Sr., died in 2003.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Catherine (Hanlon) Ruggiero.
She was a graduate of Simon Gratz High School, Philadelphia, where she was the Secretary of the Class of 1941.
Esther worked as a secretary for Unisys (previously Sperry/Univac), in Blue Bell PA, until her retirement. She was intimately understanding of the historical development of America's first computer (ENIAC) and helped to publish "From Dits to Bits: A personal history of the electronic computer" in 1979.
She loved reading, baseball, music, and traveling and was a giving and beloved person who touched many lives.
She is survived by her three children: Dr. Frank M., husband of Loretta M. Carter, Wyomissing; Diane L., wife of Gregory W. Griffith, University Park, MD, and Meggen L., wife of Raymond W. Stockstill, Newport Coast, CA. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Carter, Peter, Libby, Cate, Beau, Emma, and Benjamin.
She was predeceased by her sister, Ethel Pyffer.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel at the Villa St. Elizabeth, 1201 Museum Road, West Reading. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Barren Hill Cemetery, Lafayette Hill. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
