Emma Caroline (Heck) Maess, 88, of Spring Township, died October 5, 2011 in the Mifflin Center.

Her husband, George T. Maess, died November 27, 1989.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Anna (Geiser) Heck.

She was a 1940 graduate of Reading High School and a graduate of McCann School of Business.

Emma worked at Heck Bros Florist and Wetherhold & Metzger before devoting all of her time as a homemaker. After her daughter was grown she went back to work as a secretary for Lutheran Children's Bureau, a division of The Lutheran Home at Topton.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Reading, where she held roles as: parish secretary, financial secretary, historian, secretary of the Altar Guild, secretary of Lutheran Church Women's Group, choir member and lay reader.

Emma loved to travel, especially to Disney World. She also loved her three cats: Nikki, Mistee and Sam.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra A. Maess, with whom she resided. There are two sisters-in-law, Majorie W. Heck, Philadelphia, NY and Jacqueline Maess, Temple. Several nieces and nephews also survive her.

Emma was predeceased by her brother, William C. Heck.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. A visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private in Aulenbach Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Animal Rescue League, P.O. Box 69, Mohnton, PA 19540 or the charity of your choice.
