Elsie M. Craig

Elsie M. (Benke) Craig, 101, formerly of Shillington, passed away January 11, 2019, at Berks Heim.

She was the widow of Edward N. Craig. They married September 17, 1955.

Born in West Patterson, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Rudolph and Amelia Benke.

She was a 1936 graduate of Reading Standard Evening High School.

She was employed by CNA Insurance Company as a clerk and supervisor for 47 years, retiring in 1984. After retiring she enjoyed volunteering and traveling with her husband.

Elsie was an active member of St. John's German Lutheran Church, Reading where she served as a Sunday school teacher, in the choir and on various committees.

She was a member of The Horizon (Encore) Senior Citizens Chorus of Reading. Elsie loved reading, hiking, bowling, singing and good music.

Elsie is survived by two nieces, Eleanor June Offenderlein, Womelsdorf and Hildegard, wife of Lew Rodgers, MD. One grand-niece, Emily Rodgers and one grand-nephew, Evan Rodgers, also survives her.

She was predeceased by her sister, Adelaide G. Offenderlein and her brother, William Benke.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading with burial to follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's German Lutheran Church 521 Walnut St., Reading, PA 19601.
