E. Robert Hottenstein, 97, formerly of Wyomissing, passed away in his residence at the Highlands on Friday, November 5, 2021. He was the loving husband of Betty L. (Heavener), with whom he recently celebrated 61 years of marriage on October 1, 2021. He was born to the late Elmer A. and Clara (Luppold) Hottenstein in Laureldale.
During WWII, Bob served in the 69th and 89th Infantry Divisions as well as the Army Air Force. He earned an Infantry Bronze Star for his heroic service. After returning home, Bob enrolled in higher studies, graduating from the Penn State Mechanical Engineering program and the Nuclear Reactor Operation Studies program at North Carolina State College.
For 41 years, Bob served as a mechanical and nuclear engineer at Gilbert Associates (GAI). Some of the projects he oversaw include: the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory's liquid metal cooled nuclear submarines; the Saxton Research Center's Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility (which would be the prototype for all future GAI nuclear facilities); the Project Manager for Florida Power Corporation Nuclear Plant; and the Manager of the Research and Development department. Bob retired in 1991.
Left to treasure Bob's memory is his dear wife, Betty, and his sister, Mary Ulrich of Shoemakersville. He is also survived by his two nieces, a nephew, and many treasured friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Anna Mae Hottenstein.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 1:00 PM at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Friends and family are invited to gather at the funeral home beginning at 12:30 PM.
