Elizabeth Lally Griesmer died on Friday, June 28, 2024, just shy of her 95th birthday. Betty was born in Brookline, MA, grew up in Bronxville, NY, raised her family in Kingston and Shavertown, PA, and ultimately resided in Wyomissing.
Betty spent much of her life volunteering for causes which mattered deeply to her. A parishioner of St. Ignatius Church, Betty taught CCD and RCIA. At St. Therese's Church in Shavertown, Betty began each day with daily Mass and was devoted in many ways to serving the Parish.
Betty loved volunteering at Head Start and spent 28 years tutoring children at the McGlynn Learning Center in Wilkes Barre. It was there that she found her calling and tried to make a difference in the lives of her students. The "Lifesaver Lady" was dearly loved.
Betty was an avid sportswoman in tennis and took up golf at age 76, scoring a hole-in-one in her first year playing. She was passionate about staying active and could be seen walking twice daily on the hills of Misericordia University. Betty considered those walks to be daily medicine for her excellent health.
Betty is survived by her dear children: Betsey Radcliffe (John), Jamie Evans (Bob), Paul Griesmer (Diane) and Mariana Knittle (Kevin Murnane). Betty also delighted in seeing and hearing from her eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was a master at Go Fish, Peek-a-Boo, Johnny Johnny Whoops, and keeping track of their busy lives and accomplishments. "Bigi", as she was lovingly known, LOVED to have fun. Her humor and quips were infectious.
Betty's family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Diane Pletz, Bruce Martin, and the Lakehouse ambassadors as well as Grane Hospice. Their infinite devotion to Betty's care allowed her final years to be joyful and comfortable.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2024 at St. Therese's Church, 64 Davis Street, Shavertown, PA 18708. The family invites friends and relatives to gather at the church for a Celebration of Betty's Life from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to The McGlynn Learning Center, 72 Midland Ct, Wilkes Barre, PA 18702 or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Sacred Heart RC Parish, 740 Cherry St., West Reading, PA 19611.
