Elizabeth W. Goodwin

Mrs. Elizabeth W. (Waters) Goodwin, 93 of Reading, passed away April 22, 2009 in her home.

Known as Libby to her friends, she was the daughter of the late William N. and Margaret H. (Richardson) Waters and the widow of the late Dr. James F. Goodwin, Jr., deceased March 28, 1973.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Goodwin was a graduate of Allegheny High School and Duquesne University. She completed post graduate courses at Penn State University and graduated from The Reading School District's Practical Nursing Program.

Before her retirement, Mrs. Goodwin was employed by The Reading School District (1961-1981), where she taught English and reading, at Southwest Jr. High School and Reading High School.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, The Dr. James F. Goodwin Scholarship Fund and Auxiliary, a member, treasurer, and past matron of The Sarah Jackson Chapter #74 of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated and the district deputy of the Fourth District Deborah Grand Chapter.

During WWII, Mrs. Goodwin worked in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. Government, Department of the Army Signal Brigade as a stenographer and typist and later in Reading, PA at the Office of the Navy.

Mrs. Goodwin enjoyed activities with her family, she is survived by: her son, James F. Goodwin III, Temple, three daughters, Maxine E. Goodwin, West Reading, Anita E. Goodwin, Reading, and Loraine M. Goodwin M.D., J.D., California, two brothers, Rev. Shelton B. Waters, Philadelphia, Harry W. Waters, Pittsburgh, and three grandchildren, Richard Wambi Cook, Lavell Goodwin, and Charissa Miller, and son-in-law, Gary Craighead.

The religious services will be Monday, April 27, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 100 West Windsor St. Reading, PA. Friends may call Monday 8:30-10:00 a.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Burial services will be on Tuesday, April 28, 11:30 a.m. at Charles Evans Cemetery.
