Eleanor J. (Sloatman) Garis, 82, formerly of 2226 Noble Street, West Lawn, died October 8th at 4:30 am in her residence at the Woodland Plaza Apartments, 1701 State Hill Road, Wyomissing, Pa 19610.
She was the widow of John L. Garis who died February 8, 1994.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late William S. and Martha E. (Bauder) Sloatman.
She was a 1940 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Schuylkill County, a 1944 graduate of The Reading Hospital Nursing School and a 1963 graduate of West Chester University.
Mrs. Garis worked as a Registered Nurse for a number of years at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
She later became an instructor in 1961 for 12 years in the Licensed Practical Nurses program at Reading Muhlenberg Vocational-Technical School and last as a coordinator of the Practical Nursing Program at Reading Muhlenberg Vocational-Technical School for eight years before retiring in 1981.
Mrs. Garis was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, John N. husband of Katherine (Shugars) Garis of Crystal Lake, Ill. and two daughters, Martha K. wife of Larry Weidner of Hamburg and Gail L. wife of Dennis P. Schell of Bern Township.
Mrs. Garis is also survived by a brother, William S. Sloatman Jr., of Sarasota, Florida.
There are six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday October 18th at 10:00 a.m. West Lawn United Methodist Church, Penn & Woodside Avenues. Rev. Jeffrey Raffauf officiating. No public visitation. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
