Eleanor Conrad

Eleanor DeLong Conrad, 97, formerly of West Reading, passed away December 12, 2023, in the care of Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. She was the widow of Henry Franklin Conrad, who passed away March 25, 2012.

Born in Philadelphia to the late Roy Allen and Marion (Myers) DeLong, Eleanor graduated high school from Friends Select School of Philadelphia in 1943 and graduated from Bucknell University in 1946 with her Bachelor of Arts in French. A talented flutist, Eleanor performed in the Bucknell Band and Orchestra, was a life member of the Mu Phi Epsilon Music Society, and played in the Frankford Symphony Orchestra of Philadelphia through the 1940's. Eleanor also was a member of the House of Representatives at Bucknell. In 1947 she graduated from the Peirce Business School of Philadelphia.

Her career began in 1948 with the Long Island Railroad. In 1949, she served at the Temple University Technical Institute. From 1950-1952, Eleanor served as a secretary for the du Pont Company, Rayon Division, of Philadelphia. In 1952, she and Henry married and relocated to Augusta, GA, near Camp Gordon where he was stationed. While in Georgia, she served as secretary to the General while her husband finished his training. In the early 1950's, the Conrads settled back in Reading.

Eleanor dedicated her life to supporting her husband and raising her three daughters.

In 1990, Eleanor joined the Daughters of the American Revolution, Tah Gah Jute Chapter.

She was a member of Salem (Spangsville) UCC of Oley.

Eleanor is survived by her daughters: Louise, wife of Thomas S. Piper, Laurel, MD; Nancy, widow of John J. Graham, Pinehurst, NC; and Carol, wife of John A. Wondowski, Wyomissing, PA; six grandchildren: Jennifer Mermod, wife of Denis; Connie Graham; Rachel Majko, wife of Justin; Gail Wondowski; Ann Wondowski; and Austin Wondowski; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her sister, Marion Lewis, and her brother, David DeLong.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Eleanor's memory may be offered to Salem UCC at the address below.

Funeral Services for Eleanor will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Salem UCC, 307 Covered Bridge Road, Oley PA 19547, with committal to follow at graveside. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, and again Monday from 10:00 until the start of services at Salem UCC. Condolences may be expressed at KuhnFuneralHomes.com.
