Edward J. Shultz, Jr., 69, of West Lawn, died November 29, 2015, in Reading Hospital.
He was the husband of Sara "Sally" A. (Stefonich) Shultz; they were married on September 20, 1969.
Born in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Julia (Crnovich) Shultz.
He was a graduate of Lebanon High School in 1964, and served our country in the US Navy.
Ed began his professional career as a sports writer for the Lebanon Daily News for three years before joining the Reading Eagle Company where he worked for 23 years. At the Eagle he initially was a sports writer and eventually reached the position of assistant managing editor. Ed was hired by GPU where he served as director of communications for seven years and then served as vice president of communications for Sovereign Bank for 9 years until retiring in 2009. Ed realized full retirement wasn't for him so after 18 months he began working for Customers Bank in their communications department last working October 21.
Dedicated to the Berks County Community, Ed served on numerous boards including; Bethany Children's Home, where he won the Children's Award in 2004 for his dedication to their organization; Olivet Boys and Girls Club; BCTV, where he chaired October Fest; Berks Talk Line and the American Red Cross, Berks Co. Chapter. He served as an instructor for the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce and Industry teaching business writing. He, John Ernesto and Bill Flippin began the Hawley-Quier Memorial Golf Tournament, an event that continues with great interest today.
The highlight of Ed's life was his family especially his grandchildren. In addition to his Sally, Ed is survived by his children, Andrew J., husband of Sarah Zelhart, Phoenix, AZ and Carolyn S., wife of Mark Spano, Wernersville; and grandchildren, Megan, Max and Paige Spano.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:30 a.m. in St. Ignatius RCC, 2810 St. Alban's Drive, Sinking Spring, PA 19608. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading and Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the church. Burial in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery will be private.
