Edward W. Schappell, 82, died May 19, 2009, in The Highlands at Wyomissing Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was the husband of M. Alice (Kenney) Schappell, whom he married October 7, 1951
Born Tuesday, May 10, 1927 in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Philip E. and Margaret (Williams) Schappell.
Edward was a 1944 graduate of Reading High School and attended The Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, serving on both Jr. and Sr. church councils. He also became involved with the Boy Scouts of America and the Hawk Mountain Scout Council as district commissioner. Later in life he became a charter member and president of the Flying Dutchman Ski Club then was on the National Ski Patrol for many years. He was the president of both the PA Ski Federation and the Eastern Ski Council and held many other positions within the local club. He maintained memberships in several other organizations such as the Masonic Lodge #435, 32nd Degree for over fifty years, the Shrine, Legion of Honor, VFW, American Legion and the Silver Swallows Society.
Edward was employed for 42 years with Met Ed and then later GPU, retiring as a power director in 1989.
He was a WWII Marine Corps veteran, serving in the South Pacific and Japan in Expeditionary Forces.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother-in law, William E. Kenney, Reading, his niece, Ann (Kenney) Sheafer, Leesburg, VA, great niece Sarah and great nephew Patrick, Aunt Joan Woodbridge, Scranton, cousin Bobby Babcock, Mahanoy City and many other cousins also survive him.
Services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 421 Windsor St., Reading, PA 19601. Entombment will follow in Charles Evans Mausoleum. Friends may call Tuesday 10:00-11:00 a.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Spirit Lutheran Church at the address above, The Historical Society of Berks County: 940 Centre Ave, Reading, PA 19601 or to the charity of your choice.
