Edward C. Hilbert, 89, of Reading, died peacefully at 10:45 a.m. April 2, 2011 in Spruce Manor where he had been a guest for seven months.

He was the husband of Leona K. (Unger) Hilbert to whom he had been married for 67 years..

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Irvin C. and Grace (Brown) Hilbert.

He was a 1940 graduate of Reading High School.

Ed worked as a tire builder for over 40 years for Firestone Tire and Rubber and retired from Occidental Chemical in 1986. He then worked part time as a tip staff at the Berks County Court House for 10 years.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Reading.

Ed was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in WWII on a destroyer in the Pacific as a 2nd class Radar Man.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two children: Carole L., Brodman, Reading and Nan L., wife of Larry L. Forrer, Reading as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Richard I. Hilbert, Reading and his sister, Dorothy Pizzo, Reading. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Knarr.

He will be greatly missed by his family.

Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, with a viewing from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Memory of Ed to: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4201 Stoudt's Ferry Bridge Road, Reading, PA 19605 or the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, 237 Court St., Reading, PA 19601.
