Edith Degler

Edith "Edie" Degler, 80, of West Lawn, passed away in her home on Saturday, June 20, 2020. She was the widow of Barry Lee Degler, who passed away in 2009 and with whom she had shared almost 60 years of marriage.

Edie was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to the late Erwin and Lina Schnabel. She moved to the United States after she finished her schooling and settled in the Reading area and worked for a time at the Knitting Mills of Wyomissing.

She was a devoted wife and mother, and she treasured her role as the family's matriarch. She was proud of her German heritage, and enjoyed exposing her family to German cultural events. Edie was known for her beautiful garden, which she maintained with care.

Her faithful companion, Taffy, was never far from her side.

Edie is survived by her children: Debbie L. (Degler) Patton, of Laureldale; Deanna L. (Degler), widow of George K. Smith, of Reading; Dennis L. Degler, of Laureldale; David A. Degler, husband of Alicia (Blough), of Sinking Spring; and Daniel B. Degler of Sinking Spring; her grandchildren: Scott H., Jr., Jessika, Brandi Patton, Crystal, Jamie, and Alyssa Smith, and Derick M., Aidan S., and Alex M. Degler; and her great grandchildren: Juliana and Jackson Minninger, Julius and Nevaeh Torres, Carson Degler, Travis Jr., Christian, and Jeremiah Kauffman, and Scarlett, Conner, and Hunter Rice.

In addition to her husband, Edie was predeceased by her grandson Michael K. Smith.

Edie's family requests that contributions in her memory be offered to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, 58 Kennel Rd, Birdsboro, PA 19508.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 25 at 1 PM at the Kuhn Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc, 5153 Kutztown Rd, Temple with Pastor Jere Bashore. Friends and family are invited to call at the funeral home from 12 PM until the beginning of services. Burial will be at Laureldale Cemetery.
