Earl George Wood

Earl George "EG" Wood passed away on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. at Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was a long time resident of the Lutheran Home at Topton, Heilman House.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Earl W. and Ila (Stephenson) Wood and a 1966 graduate of Reading High School. Many years ago, Earl was employed at the Hamburg Center as an aide. Earl lived in many different residences, but his foundation was always in his faith in Jesus Christ. Wherever he lived, he served the local congregations and fostered many pastoral relationships. He assisted with services held at the Kutztown Manor and Wilson Manor by the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Sassaman. He also assisted the late Rev. Roger Ulrich in ministry, joining St. Peter's UCC, Topton and serving on Church Consistory briefly. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran, Kutztown during a time he resided at Wilson Manor, where he participated in liturgical dance. When he returned to Topton, he joined Redeemer Bible Fellowship Church and befriended many, including Rev. Dan Hoffstetter. Earl played the role of Popper the Penguin at Brandywine Heights Elementary School, and was a cafeteria assistant there and at Kutztown Elementary. He joined the choir at St. Paul's Lutheran, Mertztown as a music critic, while never really being critical.

Earl loved to walk the trails up at the Lutheran Home, read the lessons in worship, share memories of his youth and his loving mother, and the color pink. He also was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan. Earl was a good man, a gentle man, and a truly repentant man of Christ.

Earl is survived by sister, Gloria, wife of Sherman L. Barto, Jr., of Muhlenberg Township; brother, Jack Wood, husband of Deborah, of Orrtanna, PA; many nieces and nephews, and a nextended family, best friend Joe and wife Jen Dragovits. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by brother, Larry Wood, and sister, Ila Potrok.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 50 Luther Drive, Mertztown, PA with the Rev. Dan Hoffstetter and the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Sassaman co-officiating.

Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, PA 19611 is honored to serve the Wood family. Condolences may be recorded at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
