Earl W. "Tuna" Gernert, 84, died January 2, 2014, in his West Reading residence.

He was the husband of Jeanette (Campitelli) Gernert, to whom he was married for 60 years.

Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late Earl J. and Edith A. (Bender) Gernert.

Earl was a veteran of the United States Army.

He was the owner of Gernert Auto Repair, West Reading, from 1983 until his retirement in 1995.

Earl was a lifetime member of Goodwill, West Reading, and Berkshire Heights Fire Companies

. He was a baseball and softball umpire for 45 years, including the Berks County Amateur Softball Association.

In addition to his wife, Earl is survived by his daughter, Donna A., wife of Gregg Sweigert, Exeter Township. There is one sister, Jean Scott, East Stroudsburg. Two grandchildren, Kristen, wife of Peter Witek, and Scott Sweigert also survive him. Earl was predeceased by his brother, William E. Gernert.

The family would like to thank BVNA/Hospice for their caring, compassionate care given to Earl during his recent illness.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Entombment will be in Gethsemane Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berks County Veterans Association, 726 Cherry St., Reading, PA 19602 or Animal Rescue League, P.O.
